BALTIDELPHIA

I collaborated with Philly artist Tim Pannell on two pieces for this show...

January 9th to February 6th, 2010. The Hexagon, in conjunction with My House Gallery (Philadelphia), presents: Baltidelphia, an experimental collaboration curated by Phuong Pham (the Hexagon) and Alex Gartelmann (My House). The Baltidelphia exhibition features 22 Baltimore artists paired with 22 Philadelphia artists who were asked to collaborate/correspond through whatever means they chose--facebook, text message, twitter, carrier pigeon, postal mail, sky-writing, etc. Rather than get lost in the flood of tweeting that flickrs to your tumbl that feeds to your blog (LOL smileyface), Baltidelphia embraces communication, distance, and geography as points of departure to create a project.

Baltidelphia will be exhibited in both Baltimore and Philadelphia, with selections of the projects being displayed in each spaces. The Hexagon will have a soft opening on Saturday, January 9th, as some participating Baltimore artists will be traveling to My House Gallery for a joint opening reception. Philadelphia artists will travel to Baltimore, Saturday, February 6th for the closing.

Participating artists (Bmore & Philly): Kathy Beachler & Martha Savery, Emily Claire Dierkes & Jim Grilli, Miguel Sabogal & Bryan Patrick Rice, Jon Bevers & Damian Weinkrantz, Kathleen Mazurek & Daniel Potterton, Sarah Magida & Kristen Neville, Mike Riley & Tim Pannell, Jared Fischer & Tyler Kline, Freda Mohr & Andrew Brehm, Heather Von Marko & Hannah Heffner, Julie Pahr & Fernando Ramos, Andrew Geddes & Daniel Petraitis, Na Kim & Mike Ryan, Jennifer Mullins & Leah Mackin, Ric Royer & Beth Heinly, Robert Brulinski & Piper Brett, Magnolia Laurie & Nike Desis, Megan Lavelle & Jen Gin, Sean Scheidt & Masha Badinter, Monique Crab & Hope Rovelto, Phuong Pham & Alex Gartelmann

The Hexagon Space is a peer-operated venue in Baltimore, Maryland that provides an all-inclusive outlet for the arts with an emphasis on supporting local and under-exposed artists and performers. My House Gallery is an artist-run alternative space in South Philadelphia that focuses on creating exhibition opportunities, community building, and progressive and socially relevant curatorial projects. Visit hexagonspace.com and myhousegallery.wordpress.com/ for more information.

I also mashed the original flier into this. And this was my 200th blog post, if that means anything.

THE EXPANDING MAN

Sneak peak at the shirt I am designing for The Expanding Man. It took a little convincing, but Carlos agreed that the words were meant to be filaments.

PHILLY'S ANGRY RIVER SYSTEM

I still have no idea what shape Philadelphia is. From what I am hearing, my Google image search has mislead me.

Scrawled in sketchbook, photographed on kitchen table and colored in Photoshop. I think that crumb is from an Eggo waffle.

EUROPA

Thanks to everyone that made it to the show Friday. Special thanks to Shaina and Phu for helping me with all the show preparation and to Jonas and Andrew for helping with the installation... and special thanks to Carlos for playing a very cool set on last minute notice since the bass player for the other band I booked broke a bottle over the guitarist's face the night before. And thanks to Compression and Imperial China for not breaking bottles over each others' faces and for generally killing it. And thanks to Logan for helping run the show!

TONIGHT'S SHOW

IMPERIAL CHINA
http://www.myspace.com/imperialchina
"Imperial China, a trio from DC, carry on the city's long and proud legacy of slashing, experimental post-punk that's equally brainy and ballsy. They create fierce grooves, turn on a dime, throw some weird electronic flourishes in for good measure, and shimmy about on stage like they took dancing lessons from Guy Picciotto." - Philadelphia Weekly, January 7, 2009.

COMPRESSION
http://www.myspace.com/compressionland
"Compression show off a depth and maturity that few metallic outfits are capable of. Cranium-cracking riffs are combined with an experimental, creative approach that never fails to captivate and impress. Passionate, erratic and utterly unique, Compression have not only broken the mold -- they've created a new one altogether." - Baltimore City Paper

FRIDAY THE 13TH OF NOVEMBER

I hung the show today. The initial public reaction came from one old dude with a guitar that wandered in from Charles Street and said "This stuff is soo violent!"

UNFORTUNATE LOGO PREMISE

Commissioned to design a logo for an Orlando-based marathon/relay team, whose mascot was a bull. Sadly, they needed an Orlando-based character hidden in the logo. Can you find it?

I think narcolepsy should describe a condition where you give wolves drugs. Or jump over wolves while you are on drugs. The condition where you fall asleep uncontrollably should be called 'Everyone Loves Raymond'.

GOBLIN BLOCKS

Thanks to Photoshop, mediocre art can be just a few clicks away. Glad I didn't need to cut out and paint fifteen hundred pieces of wood to make these.
